Research and insights

Understand the science.

Explore the research behind the ingredients. Knowing what a study examined—and what it didn’t—helps you make an informed choice.

Human research: yerba mate and body composition

Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial · 2015 · 30 participants · 12 weeks

Researchers studied 3 grams per day of yerba mate in capsules in Korean adults with obesity. They reported differences in some body-fat measures compared with placebo.

The limit: this was a small trial of a particular capsule preparation, not a trial of Unimate, Balance, or Shylow’s protocol. It does not establish an expected result for you.

Read the study on PubMed · PMID 26408319
Ingredient research: chlorogenic acid

Review article · 2013

“Roles of Chlorogenic Acid on Regulating Glucose and Lipids Metabolism: A Review” summarizes research involving this plant compound. It is not a clinical trial of the finished products.

Read the review · PMCID PMC3766985

Animal study · 2025

A separate study examined chlorogenic acid and skeletal-muscle metabolism in mice fed a high-fat diet. Animal findings cannot establish benefits in people or prove a product’s effectiveness.

How to put research in context
  • Match the formulation. A study of an ingredient or a capsule does not automatically apply to a finished drink.
  • Check the study type. Human trials, reviews, laboratory research, and animal studies answer different questions.
  • Look at scale and duration. Small, short studies can leave important questions unanswered.
  • Keep expectations personal. Research does not guarantee individual results. This information is educational and does not replace medical advice.

A closer look at the daily routine

Unimate

The current US product information says to mix one stick pack with 17–24 oz. of hot or cold water, to taste, one or two times daily. Follow your own product’s label.

Balance

The provider’s routine places Balance before or with the heaviest meal. Mix according to the current label and drink promptly after mixing.

Meal timing

The program includes time-restricted eating. Fasting is not appropriate for everyone; a clinician can help you assess whether it suits your circumstances.

Directions are general information, not a personalized plan. View the provider’s current routine ↗

Before changing your diet, starting supplements, or fasting, speak with a qualified healthcare professional—especially if you take medication, manage a health condition, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Unimate contains caffeine.

From plant to product

Know where
your routine begins.

Yerba mate is a South American plant with a long history as a brewed beverage. Unimate uses a concentrated extract of its green leaves, while Balance brings together several soluble-fiber sources in a separate formula.

The manufacturer describes harvesting, drying, aging, and extracting the mate leaves. This is product background, not evidence of a health outcome.
